More Children Browsing Without Adult Supervision

A recent research by Ofcom shows that children are increasingly using the internet on their own without any form of adult supervision.

Based on an audit of media literacy across the nation, Ofcom has published its latest Children’s Media Literacy interim report, which brought some startling facts to light. It was found that about a third of the children in the 12- 15 age group claim to have internet access in their rooms. More than half of the children in this age group state that they use the internet without an adult watching them.

However, the alarming fact revealed by the survey is that at least a fourth of this group fail to conduct basic security checks on the websites they visit, like checking for the lock symbol or looking for updated information. On a positive note, more children are now using basic privacy settings on their accounts in social networking sites to restrict visitors.

About two in every dozen children in the 8- 11 year age group boast of an internet connection in their bedrooms, and one third of them use the internet when alone. About 20% of 5- 7 year olds state the same about using the internet without adults nearby.

The trend revealed by the report is that more children are now allowed freedom to access internet without being watched. While parents are concerned about the dangers of the internet, not many (45%) take the basic precaution of installing control software on their machines. Parents who wish to do so but do not know how to go about it can check out Ofcom’s online guide about the same topic.
