Everything You Need to Know about Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co. And the Environmental Defense Fund

Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co (KKR) was set up by Henry Kravis and George Roberts in the mid 70’s with some support from the First Chicago Corporation. However, in a drive to make their portfolio companies and acquisitions more ecologically friendly, KKR have set up a unique project that has changed the method by which business concerns and environmental activists carry on their everyday business.

Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co’s Henry Kravis and the the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) joined forces a year ago, intending to make green business procedures a widespread principle. Issues like toxic emissions and preposterous consumption of water resources are high on their list of goals. Eco-efficiency (the term was originally introduced by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development) is the technique employed to achieve these objectives, applying techniques like improving fuel economy through vehicle fleet maintenance, using clean energy and waste reduction. Efficient though it was the KKR and EDF did not even understand the range of the program’s advantages until Ken Mehlman, the person responsible for the program, evaluated the numbers from the program when it had been in operation for its first year. Much to everybody’s surprise, Ken found that using eco-efficiency not only helped in preserving the local environment, but was increasing the the profit from all their business organizations as well. Nearly all of the businesses affiliated to Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co and Ken Mehlman nowadays actively take part in the Green Portfolio Project. And, with a current business portfolio with a worth of eighty six billion USD, you can be certain this was not an easy feat. The Green Portfolio project now includes new and innovative initiatives. The Climate Corps Program administrated by the Environmental Defense Fund is a great example of this, it campaigns for cost-efficient, green principles to MBA interns. KKR and Ken Mehlman have made the effort to create metrics and other relevant systems which manipulate resources. This type of info is significant as any type of business can evaluate each of their day-to-day processes and find out where they can improve while simultaneously allowing them to see their impact on the planet. Henry Kravis, the KKC, and the Environmental Defense Fund have encouraged all sorts of businesses to go green. Their innovations have set a high standard for companies in every industry and illustrated that running a profitable business need not entail the hefty price of negatively impacting our planet.
